Portugals Diktator Salazar hat es 1936 errichten lassen, um hier Regimekritiker wegzusperren. Viele der ungl\u00fccklichen Inhaftierten \u00fcberlebten die schweren Haftbedingungen nicht lang und starben an Zwangsarbeit, Tropenkrankheiten und Mangelern\u00e4hrung. Erst 1974, nach der Nelkenrevolution in Portugal wurde das Lager geschlossen und die Insassen befreit.
