Die tiefstehende Sonne beleuchtet die Berge spektakul\u00e4r, wieder sehen wir mehrere Kondore \u00fcber den Gipfeln kreisen. Das Land ist so unglaublich weit. Solche Weite habe ich bisher nur in der W\u00fcste oder am Meer erlebt. Doch hier ist es wieder ganz anders. Die langgestreckten Wolken unterstreichen die Weite noch, auf der riesigen Ebene ist nichts au\u00dfer Grasb\u00fcscheln, Z\u00e4unen, ein paar Felsen und Sand. Immer wieder sind kleine Herden Guanakos zu sehen, ab und zu auch ein Nandu. Ein oder zweimal pro Stunde taucht eine Estancia naben der Stra\u00dfe auf; stets mit einem Windrad f\u00fcr die Wasserpumpe und ein paar B\u00e4umen als Windschutz. Als wir aus der Hochebene ins Tal des Rio Santa Cruz herunter fahren, ist die Fernsicht \u00fcberw\u00e4ltigend. Bis weit hinein in die Anden sind die Berge sichtbar, das sind etwa 200 Kilometer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Doch schon kurz drauf sind wir angekommen in El Calafate, einer Kleinstadt mit riesiger Ausdehnung. An der hoch \u00fcber der Stadt gelegenen Busstation gibt es auch keinen Geldautomaten. Wacker treten wir den Fu\u00dfweg zu unserem Hostal an. Etwas anderes bleibt uns auch nicht \u00fcbrig, denn wir haben kein argentinisches Geld und kein Internet, um einen Uber zu bestellen. Der Wind fegt uns beinahe davon. In Puerto Natales wurden wir schon gewarnt, dass man an gewissen Stellen sein Auto nicht abstellen sollte, immer wieder werden Pkws vom Wind umgeworfen und davongefegt. Im Kies leiden die Rollen sehr durch den Staub, so leiden nur unsere Bandscheiben und unsere Bindeh\u00e4ute. Die vorbei brausenden Pickups und Gel\u00e4ndew\u00e4gen wirbeln davon ausreichend Material in die Luft. Die Adresse, zu der uns unsere Offline-Satelliten-Navigationsapp leitet, erweist sich als vollkommen falsch. Wir landen an einem Campingplatz. Wer will bei n\u00e4chtlichen Temperaturen um den Gefrierpunkt schon zelten? Der freundliche Wirt weist uns den Weg, nur verstehen tun wir nicht viel davon. Wir irren weiter \u00fcber Schotterpfade, wieder tragen wir unsere Packen auf dem R\u00fccken, bei mir verkrampft sich alles. Da vorn, ein Taxistand! Trotz aller Vorbehalte bin ich jetzt soweit, ein Taxi zu nehmen. Da stellt sich heraus, dass der Taxistand genau gegen\u00fcber von unserem Hotel ist. Wir haben das bestm\u00f6gliche Wetter erwischt, die Fernsicht und der wolkenlose Himmel sind \u00fcberw\u00e4ltigend. Der Gletscher geh\u00f6rt zum gro\u00dfen patagonischen Inlandeisfeld zwischen Chile und Argentinien, nach der Antarktis das gr\u00f6\u00dfte zusammenh\u00e4ngende eisbedeckte Gebiet auf der S\u00fcdhalbkugel. Eine riesige Wand aus Eis erstreckt sich etwa f\u00fcnf Kilometer breit in die s\u00fcdwestliche Flanke des Lago Argentina. Obwohl der See hier rund 160 Meter tief ist, ragt der Eispanzer noch bis zu 70 Meter \u00fcber die Wasseroberfl\u00e4che hinauf. Durch den immensen Druck, der auf dem Eis lastet, kracht und knallt es alle paar Minuten. Wie riesige Z\u00e4hne ragen die Eiss\u00e4ulen dicht gepackt nebeneinander auf, immer wieder brechen gro\u00dfe Eisbl\u00f6cke vom Gletscher ab. Mit lautem Get\u00f6se donnern sie ins Wasser, das Echo hallt mehrfach nach. Ich stelle mir unsere Stadtpfarrkirche daneben vor. Die Kirchturmspitze w\u00fcrde nicht mal \u00fcber den Rand emporragen. Nach der Schiffstour wandern wir noch \u00fcber die sehr gut ausgebauten Wege des Nationalparks um die Gletscherzunge herum. Zur\u00fcck in der Stadt lernen wir beim Abendessen in der Pizzeria nicht nur eine chilenische, sondern au\u00dferdem eine franz\u00f6sische und eine argentinische Familie kennen.
