Schon von weitem sind die Vulkane mit den unaussprechlichen Namen Tahurangi, Ngauruhoe und Ruapehu zu sehen. Wir stocken nochmal Vorr\u00e4te auf und sichern uns diesmal schon am fr\u00fchen Nachmittag einen Platz auf der billigen DOC-Campsite. In Whakapapa, so haben wir geh\u00f6rt, werden Phantasiepreise verlangt. Vor Schlottern k\u00f6nnen wir gegen Morgen nicht mehr schlafen und stehen schon um 5 Uhr 30 auf. Am Armaturenbrett zeigt der Toyota 2 Grad Celsius an! Wir verzichten auf jegliche Morgentoilette, starten den Motor und fahren die paar Kilometer zum Nationalpark Tongariro. Bis da sind wir halbwegs aufgetaut und starten unsere Wanderung zu den Tama Seen bekleidet mit mehreren Lagen Funktionskleidung und Pullovern \u00fcbereinander, denn es ist immer noch sehr frostig, ein eisiger Wind bl\u00e4st uns ins Gesicht. Immerhin geht die Sonne gerade auf. F\u00fcr den Weg zu den Kraterseen beim Sattel zwischen dem rauchenden Vulkan Tongariro, &nbsp;dem schneebedeckten Ruapehu und dem Schicksalsberg aus dem Herrn der Ringe, Ngauruhoe braucht man so etwa drei Stunden. Wir haben wirklich Gl\u00fcck, alle Gipfel sind wolkenlos! Wo immer\nErosion droht, werden massive Bretter in den Boden gerammt, die Oberfl\u00e4che der\nWege ist oft mit einem wabenf\u00f6rmigen Kunststoffgeflecht belegt. So kann zwar\nder Regen die kleinen Kieselsteine nicht so leicht davonwaschen, daf\u00fcr liegen\naber viele hunderte Kilometer Plastikzeug auf den Wanderwegen dieses\nwundersch\u00f6nen Landes herum. Ob sich die Leute auch Gedanken um den Abrieb und\ndas Thema Mikroplastik gemacht haben, fragen wir uns? Was die Umwelt angeht,\nsind sie so streng hier \u2013 selbst auf den entlegensten Wanderungen fehlt nie ein\nKompostklo. Wer au\u00dferhalb der erlaubten Fl\u00e4chen campt, wird fr\u00fchmorgens oder\nsp\u00e4tnachts von Rangern verscheucht. Andererseits streut man weitfl\u00e4chig Giftk\u00f6der\nvom Flugzeug aus, legt Plastikgeflecht in die Erde und M\u00fclltrennung ist\nvielerorts ein Fremdwort. An jeder Bachfurt und jedem Bootsslip liegt\nDesinfektionsmittel bereit, damit kein Fischer oder Bootsfahrer an seiner\nAusr\u00fcstung Algen oder Einzeller aus einem ins n\u00e4chste Gew\u00e4sser vertr\u00e4gt. Der gleichnamige Berg liegt \u00fcber 130 Kilometer entfernt an der K\u00fcste. Tats\u00e4chlich k\u00f6nnen wir ihn dank der klaren Luft tats\u00e4chlich am Horizont erkennen. Die Maorilegende erkl\u00e4rt, wie es dazu kam: Urspr\u00fcnglich stand der Taranaki hier bei den anderen Vulkanen. Doch es kam zum Streit mit dem Tongariro, denn beide hatten sich in einen weiblichen Berg namens Pihanga verliebt. Letztlich zog der Taranki den K\u00fcrzeren und suchte das Weite \u2013 auf dem Weg zur K\u00fcste schliff er eine tiefe Schlucht in die Erde.
