Mitunter sind sie jahrelang unterwegs, ohne jemals festen Boden zu ber\u00fchren. Die riesigen V\u00f6gel haben eine Fl\u00fcgelspannweite von \u00fcber drei Meter. Auf der Halbinsel Otago liegt eine gro\u00dfe Brutkolonie, die einzige weltweit am Festland. Umweltsch\u00fctzer sorgen f\u00fcr ungest\u00f6rte Ruhe auf den hohen, windumtosten Klippen und bem\u00fchen sich au\u00dferdem, Raubtiere wie Marder, Katzen etc. fern zu halten. Infolgedessen liegt der \u00a0Bruterfolg hier recht hoch. Trotzdem ist die Art stark bedroht: Langleinenfischerei, Netze und vor allem Plastikm\u00fcll im Meer raffen mehr Tiere dahin, als geboren werden. Man kann es kaum glauben, denn die Str\u00e4nde hier im S\u00fcden der S\u00fcdinsel scheinen makellos sauber. Heute sind wir zur Sandfly Bay gewandert und haben dort die \u2013 ebenfalls bedrohten \u2013 Seel\u00f6wen beobachtet. Ein Traumstrand! Trotz strahlender Sonne war es eiskalt, denn der Wind ist uns nur so um die Ohren gepfiffen. Drau\u00dfen regnet es in Str\u00f6men, wir hatten eine sehr ungem\u00fctliche und kalte Nacht in unserem kleinen Campervan. Bis jetzt hatten wir ja Gl\u00fcck mit dem Wetter, aber jetzt ist die Kalt- und Regenfront von der Westk\u00fcste zu uns im S\u00fcdosten her\u00fcbergeschwappt. Die Leute reden viel \u00fcber den Klimawandel. So ein Wetter habe es hier noch nie gegeben. Die anhaltenden St\u00fcrme haben die Westk\u00fcste seit Wochen lahmgelegt, \u00fcberflutete und gesperrte Stra\u00dfen haben sogar Ortschaften isoliert.
